Basic Theory

Reading music and understanding the signs and symbols on the page necessitates the teaching of basic "Theory" to all students during their weekly lessons.  It is also important for flute and piano students to know how to write music on the stave.  Theory homework is closely aligned with what the student is learning in their weekly lesson.

Beginner Theory

Some students want to learn more Theory, such as writing melodies and adding harmonization or gaining a better understanding of the period during which their pieces were written.  I have developed my own Theory system to help students learn the first steps in this subject.

Advanced Theory

After completing my Theory course students may wish to continue their Theory of Music studies with the AMEB system.  These written exams are held in many centres around the country each year.

Piano and/or flute students in lower grades may be able to incorporate Theory lessons in their normal weekly lesson, but once students reach a higher practical level they may need extra time for both their instrumental studies and their Theory work.

Also, some higher grades of practical require a certain level of Theory otherwise an AMEB certificate will not be issued.

What to bring to Theory Lessons

It's very important to remember to return all Theory homework each lesson.

Students also need to bring a sharpened 2B pencil, a soft eraser, a ruler and a sharpener.

A foolscap clipboard is helpful for those times students need to write their music while sitting in front of the piano.

Manuscript paper is essential.  Books of blank manuscript can be purchased at music stores, but if you have a printer at home there are several websites where you can legally obtain free manuscript, such as the one in the link below.

Students preparing for AMEB Theory of Music Exams will need to buy the Theory Workbook for their grade.

Students who have completed my own Theory system may choose to continue with Theory studies without undergoing AMEB examination. In this case they will need to buy the "Master Your Theory" book (written by Dulcie Holland) for their level/grade.
